Text: Hebrews 11:23-40
I. Intro. - Political Endorsements and the Like.
II. A Hope from Outside This World.
1. The longings of the heart for justice, goodness and everlasting peace will come, apart from the political process.
2. John 18:36, Jesus to Pilate, “My Kingdom is not of this world . . . but from another place.”
3. Luke 12:11-12- the Holy Spirit will teach Christ followers what to say before rulers and authorities.
4. vv. 39,40- these people had a hope that was bigger than human governance and political structures.
5. Luke 1:51-53- Mary’s Song.
III. Inside or Outside Human Power Structures?
1. v. 23- Moses’ Parents? vv. 24-26- Moses? v. 29- those crossing Red Sea? v. 30- those taking Promised Land? v. 31- Rahab? v. 32- Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and Prophets?
2. Only Joseph and Daniel rose in ranks but kept an eternal perspective.
3. Zechariah- “Not by might nor by strength, but by the Spirit of the Lord.”
4. These people gained: a) a better resurrection- v. 35.; b) persecution- v. 36; c) some, death- v. 37ff.
5. Root Word of Politics, Polis- Heb. 11:10.
6. Isa. 9:6,7- increase of the Christ’-child’s government.
IV. A Strength from Above.
1. Fear more rampant among those outside of power.
2. Moses reassured Israelites- Ex. 14:13,14. Joshua reassured those taking the promised land- Josh. 1:9. Daniel and friends defied Nebuchadnezzar- Dan. 3:16-18.
3. Examples of faith in Polycarp, Blandina, believers in India, China, Sudan, Middle East and all around the world.
4. “Perfection”- that which enables us to draw near to God.
5. The accomplishment of the Cross! Jesus is the ultimate example that strength and power come from above and from outside this world.
